A commissioned work by The Dance Department of Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM)
For this creation with 3rd-year students, the choreographic duo revisit LA VIE ATTEND, one of their flagship pieces created in 2017. Render is based on a re-adaptation of La vie attend, a work created in 2017 by David Albert-Toth and Emily Gualtieri with five mid-career male performers. The piece also incorporates some elements from In Mixed Company (2013).
La vie attend explores notions of secrets and strategies, but also and above all the fear of disappearing, of being forgotten, of being cast aside. By transposing this physical and conceptual material onto a group of 19 young women, these themes resurface and take on a whole new meaning.
Here, the fear of being forgotten translates into a voracious desire to assert oneself, to express oneself, and to imprint oneself on the public's memory. The mourning of the past gives way to the potential of the future. Render is therefore a statement by these young artists, the beginning of a revolution, a playground on which they demonstrate their eagerness to advance towards new horizons as team-mates, instigators and witnesses.
